Rules of Aviário Studio

Opennig hours

  • Opening hours are from 09:00 to 18:00 from Monday to Friday, with the exception of public holidays.

  • During opening hours, there will be at least one technical assistant on site to ensure the proper functioning of the space and support users.


Access

  • Non-users presence and permanence in the Aviário Studio's facilities is subject to prior authorization. Any person can visit Aviário Studio spontaneously, but we advise you to book a guided tour to guarantee our best attention and a satisfactory experience.

  • The use of the facilities and equipment at Aviário Studio has an associated cost that must be paid before the start of use.

  • All users must sign the 'RELEASE OF LIABILITY' and 'AVIÁRIO STUDIO AND RESIDENT ARTIST LETTER OF AGREEMENT' documents in order to use Aviário Studio facilities.

  • Vaping or smoking is not allowed inside the studios.

  • Children under 14 years old are not allowed in Aviário Studio.

  • Pets are not allowed in Aviário Studio.

Misconduct or non-compliance with Aviário Studio's Terms and Conditions of Use may result in the user's expulsion and a ban from using the facilities in the future. In cases of temporary or permanent damage, a refund of the lost value may be required.

Safety rules

  • Users who do not have technical autonomy should request technical assistance, or alternatively attend a workshop to introduce the technique or equipment they intend to use.

  • Wearing the necessary protective equipment (gloves, mask, goggles, headphones, or clothing) is mandatory in Aviário Studio. Protective equipment for each piece of equipment or technique is available for collective use or purchase on-site. If using shared protective equipment, it must be disinfected with alcohol before and after use.

  • Do not smell or taste any products within Aviário Studio Workshops. Drinks and food should be kept and consumed in the kitchen area at the common room.

  • All users must follow the equipment working instructions and safety rules provided by the Aviário Studio Team. Any user who disrespects the equipment working instructions and safety rules of the Aviário Studio facilities will be forbidden to use the studio.

Materials, Equipments and Work Environment

  • Respect the work of others by not making unnecessary noise.

  • Some equipment is subject to previous booking. The use can be scheduled with the technical assistant, or by sending an email to aviariostudio@gmail.com, which requires confirmation of the availability of the desired date and time.

  • All studio users are responsible for keeping the workplace clean and organized. For that reason they must: 1. At the end of the day the workplace must be left clean, with no materials or rubbish littering the floor or work surfaces; 2. The equipment must be turned off, and the tools and materials clean and tidy in their respective places.

  • Users are free to bring and use their own materials; however, the use of materials other than those typically used at Aviário Studio's equipment and facilities must be authorized by the Aviário Studio Team to ensure the safety, suitability of the studio equipment and facilities, and a healthy working environment for the Aviário Studio Team and other users.

  • Aviário Studio is not responsible for any damage or disappearance of users' belongings.

  • User’s personal materials or belongings must be kept in the individual spaces (box, drawer, shelf, or desk) allocated to them by the Aviário Studio Team.


Residency diligencies

  • Aviário Studio is not responsible and does not offer the necessary materials users may need. Users are fully responsible for the acquisition of the materials they need for the development of their projects.

  • Aviário Studio offers a limited stock of art materials to buy on the site. Users can request the materials prices through the Aviário Studio team.

  • When buying materials in stores, you can choose to send the order directly to Aviário Studio. In this case, please contact the technical assistant, or send an email to aviariostudio@gmail.com, in order to arrange the delivery details. To store large materials, it is necessary to inform the technical assistant of the characteristics, dimensions, expected delivery date, and duration, so that it is possible to organize the stock warehouse space.

  • Some equipment is subject to previous booking. The use can be scheduled with the technical assistant, or by sending an email to aviariostudio@gmail.com, which requires confirmation of the availability of the desired date and time.

  • Users are responsible for their own art pieces and materials. Any materials or art pieces left behind will be kept for 15 days. After this period, Aviário Studio may add art pieces to the Aviário Studio Collection or recycle them into new materials.

  • At the end of the residency, users are responsible for their own art pieces and materials. Any user who wishes to ship their belongings back home will be responsible for packaging, hiring a shipping company, and covering the shipping costs. Users can arrange for Aviário Studio to provide this service: depending on the size and complexity of the packaging, the starting cost of the service is 40€, plus the cost of the packaging materials. Additionally, Aviário Studio will charge a 30€ fee for arranging a shipping company. Please note that the cost of the shipping service is the user's responsibility.

 

Workshops Rules

Clean room:

Maximum capacity: 10 people.

The Digital Workshop is the cleanest and quietest workshop at Aviário Studio. It provides a peaceful environment for digital and desk work, so unnecessary noise can disrupt the working environment.

Library

  • The books available in the library are for consultation on site and borrowing is not possible.

  • It is not possible to photocopy the books.

  • Books made available must be handled with care with a view to their better preservation and conservation.

Silkscreen’s Dark Room

Maximum capacity: 2 people.

  • NEVER open the door when the red light is on.

  • After use, leave everything clean and tidy.

  • The emulsified screens must be left to dry in the drying drawers.
    Using the material:

  • The application of emulsion on Aviário Studio screens is performed by a technical assistant. This service incurs a cost that encompasses the technical assistance, required materials, and frame rental. Booking this service is subject to the availability of materials and the Aviário Studio Team.

  • Sensitized screens should preferably be stored inside the dark room, or if there is no space available, on the shelves next to the dark room.

  • When you finish printing your project, you must inform the technical assistant so that he can proceed with the desensitization of the screens used.

Image room:

Maximum capacity: 10 people.

All bottles and packages containing ink or other chemicals must be properly identified with a label stating: content; date; to whom they belong.

Printmaking

  • Chemical acids, due to their high toxicity, are not used inside the workshop. Iron perchloride for etching copper and copper sulfate for etching zinc are used instead and are available for shared use at Aviário Studio. If there is a need for these materials for large-scale work or experiments, they must be purchased for personal use. Prior approval from the technical assistant is necessary for the use of any other products to ensure safety.

  • After each print, it is necessary to clean the press table and ensure it is not dirty to prevent contamination during the next print.

  • After use, the presses are left with the pressure relieved, except in previously agreed situations (as in the case of printing an edition).

  • Prints should be placed to dry on drying racks or between the grey cardboards, and should not be left on worktables.

  • When putting prints out to dry, please be mindful of the work of others. Place prints on trays or cardboards on top of previous prints. If additional drying space is required, the technical assistant will collect and store the dry prints.

  • The paper soaking area must be kept free of dirt, and it is not allowed to place prints there to dry. The table with towels for removing excess water should only be used with clean hands. When a towel becomes saturated with water, it should be left to dry.

Silkscreen

  • The screens are emulsified, sensitized, and de-emulsified by the technical assistant, and their use incurs a cost based on their dimensions. To use the screens, users must schedule the service with the Aviário Studio Team.

  • Never let ink dry on the screen.

  • After printing, the screen should be cleaned and put away in the Dark Room or on the shelves next to the Dark Room.

  • Any incorrect use of the screens that results in damage to the silk or the frame will incur a cost for repair.

  • The prints must be placed to dry on the drying racks, and must not be left on the work tables.

  • When putting prints out to dry, be careful with the work of others. Prints should be placed on trays or grey cardboards on top of previous prints. Whenever more drying space is needed, the technical assistant will collect and store the dry evidence.

Common Space:

Maximum capacity: 15 people.

  • WCs, kitchen, space and its equipment must be clean and tidy after each use.

  • Trash must be recycled.

Object room:

Maximum capacity: 6 people.

  • The presence of two people is mandatory to use this studio for security reasons. In the event of an accident involving one of the people, the other will be able to call for help.

  • Some of the available machines and tools require scheduling.

  • All wood that comes into contact with cutting, sanding, drilling, or any other abrasive machines must be completely clean of nails, staples, glue or any material that could damage the equipment.

  • The use of wood chemical products inside the workshop must be authorized by the Aviário Studio team.

Ceramics room:

Maximum capacity: 6 people.

  • Some ceramic materials (clay, pigments, tools, glass) are available for purchase at Aviário Studio. However, we recommend contacting us to confirm the availability of the specific quantity and type of materials Aviário Studio has in stock.

  • The use of materials other than those typically used at Aviário Studio Ceramics Workshop, such as clay, pigments, glaze, or any others, must be authorized by the technical assistant. They will assess their safety and suitability for use with our workshop equipment.

  • Opened clay packages should be kept wrapped in plastic to prevent them from drying out.

  • Items that are ready for firing must be placed on shelves at the corresponding firing temperatures.

 

KILNS

  • Electrical Kiln: 1150º, 150L

  • Gas Kiln: 1150º, 750L

  • Users cannot go beyond the line that delimits the kilns space, except when agreed with the technical assistant.

  • It is necessary to schedule the firing with the technical assistant.

  • The kilns are only operated by the technical assistant, and their loading and unloading should be done by the user with the technical assistant's supervision.

  • Kilns will only be put into operation when the load is complete and the cost of the energy has been paid.

  • After unloading, all materials used must be stored in their respective places.

  • Clay pieces to be fired for the first time must be well-dried to prevent them from exploding. Aviário Studio will not be responsible for any exploded pieces.

  • In the event of an explosion or any incident that damages the kiln, the author of the pieces will be responsible for any necessary repairs of the kiln.

  • After all procedures are followed correctly, neither Aviário Studio nor the technical assistant will be responsible for the outcome, whether good or bad, of the firing.

Mix Media room:

Maximum capacity: 16 people.

The use of this space must be previously agreed between the user and Aviário Studio.
